Getting Started

Make sure you read the topic - Plan it & Design it.  It actually tells you what.

  1. After picking an idea - do the items the Planning box first.
  2. Then, work your way down the page.  Do Home Page Planning after you learn about HTML & CSS.
  3. Then, after your learn about SQL & Database, design your database.
  4. Then, after you learn some basic PHP - creating your login/user functionality.
  5. Finally, you are ready to do the Core Functionality!

Step 1: Overall Planning

Scope of the Project

For academics, DCPS has the Canvas platform for students to use to keep track of all their assignments and upcoming work. However, despite the digital world that we live in, students still largely rely on word of mouth to find out about social events involving people at school. This website would fix that problem by allowing students to post about upcoming social event that they are looking for more people to join. It would also have a calendar of clubs and sports event for people to plan around

Solutions Overview

Scope of the Project

This app will not solve a single problem, but rather address a great number of smaller ones. All of the features of this app are solved by different applications, but they are not concentrated in one place. This will amalgamate all of these aspect into one simple and easy to use application. Furthermore, the app will be specific for Walls, and can have a more personal and small scale flair that a universal app could not.

 

Core Functionality

  • Looking For Group for social events - students can post and search for events happening that they want to have people join. They would be events open to anyone that might need more people than the poster knows.
  • Calendar of club meetings
  • Calendar for sports games
  • Calendar for social events
    • Both global and personal calendars will be available
  • Forums relating to both academic and social subjects - simple question and answer posts that allow students to seek help on assignments or questions related to upcoming events.
  • Study groups
  • Student transportation - This would allow students to see where their friends are coming to and going from school. It would be focused around public transit, and let students see what bus or train other people were on.

Step 2: Home Page Planning

Wireframe

Plan out what your home page will look like.  Create a wireframe - either electronically or via pen and pencil.  When you are done put copy of it in the box below!

Step 3: Database Planning

Database Diagram

Figure out the structure of your database - tables and fields.  This is very important.  Create this using a tool or via Paper.  I use Microsoft Access as it is very easy and creates clean layouts.
